Buying used mining equipment in Zambia: a practical checklist

What to check before you buy a used excavator, haul truck or drill rig in Zambia — hours, service history, ownership, inspection and payment.
Start with the machine's history
Ask for the hour meter reading, full service records and any major component rebuilds. A well-maintained machine with higher hours is often a better buy than a low-hour machine with no records.
Request oil analysis reports if the seller has them — they reveal engine and hydraulic wear that a walk-around cannot.
Confirm ownership and paperwork
Ask for proof of ownership, import documentation and confirmation that the machine is free of finance or liens. For imported equipment, confirm duties were paid.
Deal with registered businesses where possible and check their company registration independently.
Inspect before you pay
Arrange an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic or the dealer's technician. Check undercarriage, pins and bushings, hydraulics, engine blow-by, and electronic fault codes.
Run the machine under load where possible, not just at idle.
Agree delivery and payment terms in writing
Agree who pays for transport to site, the delivery point and when ownership transfers. Avoid paying the full amount upfront to an unverified seller.
